At the Chemung County Legislature meeting held on August 8th, 15th District Legislator Rodney J. Strange submitted petitions containing more than 500 signatures of support for reducing the speed limit on Lower Maple Avenue in the Town of Ashland.

The Legislature then passed a resolution supporting the Town of Ashland’s request to the state Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit on SR 427, better known as Lower Maple Avenue.

“Tonight the county legislature has added their voice of support calling for the state to make Lower Maple Avenue a safer roadway by reducing the speed limit,” Strange said. “The residents, farmers, businesses, and those who use this section of road have made it perfectly clear that they want this dangerous stretch of road to have its speed limit reduced and the Chemung County Legislature has joined them in this effort,” Strange said.

This is the first time that the county legislature has become invloved with the effort to reduce the speed. The Town of Ashland has made rumorous request to have the speed reduced in the past, but the state has refused to lower it.
