Chemung County Legislature Chairman Cornelius J. Milliken passed away on Monday, April 9th.

Mr. Milliken was 83 years old and served for 39 years as a member of the Chemung County Legislature representing the 7th legislative district in the Town of Elmira. He was elected Chairman in 2002 and served in that position until his death.

“Chairman Milliken was an amazing leader of our community,” said Chemung County Legislator Rodney J. Strange. “He believed in me when others didn’t and supported and stood up for me when others wouldn’t,” Strange said, recalling back in time to 2009 and 2010 when he changed his political party from Democrat to Republican and decided to run for the legislature. “I still remember the day I met with him in his office to tell him of my decision to change parties and seek the legislative seat. He never doubted my sincerity or my motives, he welcomed me with open arms.” “Since taking office, Connie called me into his office on several occasions prior to legislative meetings to inquire about how things were going and if I needed his help. He was a wonderful person and a great friend. I will never forget the advice he gave me and the lesson he tought me. I will miss him dearly. I will be eternally grateful for his friendship and kindness.”

Chairman Milliken is survived by his wife Jean, five daughters, three sons, 19 grandchildren and 10 siblings. He retired as vice-president from Thatcher Glass Manufacturing and Director of External Affairs at Corning Community College.
