FEMA on Monday, September 19th approved individual assistance to Chemung County residents and businesses impacted by flooding caused by Tropical Storm Lee.

The Village of Wellsburg had 60 homes and 11 businesses flooded on Septmeber 8th and they are in dire need of assistance from FEMA. Many people affected have no flood insurance or not enough to cover their loses.

“This will have a huge impact on the clean up and recovery effort in the Village of Wellsburg and the Town of Ashland,” 15th District Chemung County Legislator Rodney J. Strange said after hearing the news on Monday night. “The residents and businesses greatly need this assistance to get their lives back together after this horrific natural disaster.”

FEMA’s individual assistance program includes several programs, including home repair, temporary housing, grants for serious disaster-related needs and expenses not covered by insurance or other assistance programs. To register with FEMA, visit eee.DisasterAssistance.gov or call (800) 621-3362.

FEMA teams are expected in Chemung County soon and will be here for several weeks. An exact date has not yet been determained. The Community Relations Teams carry fliers and answer questions about what people will need when they apply for help.
