At a special meeting of the Chemung County Legislature on September 23rd, new boundary lines for 13 of the 15 legislative districts were approved in response to the 2010 Federal Census.

The Chemung County Charter requires that the population in each legislative district be examined following each Census. Districts must be within five percent of the median population. The median population following the 2010 Census per legislative district in Chemung County is 5731. The change in boundary lines is subject to public referendum at the general election on Nov. 5th 2013.

If approved by voters, the new 15th legislative district will include all of the Town of Elmira east of I86. This is currently in the 6th legislative district, 3rd election district (6-3). This will add 443 residents. The district will lose 231 residents who will become residents of the 13th legislative district. They include those residents living on the east side of Maple Ave. from Milton St. to Coldbrook Creek along with those living on Milton St., Maple Manor Dr., Charlesmont Rd., and the eastern side of Laurentian Place. The new district will have approximately 5833 residents.
